Penjing World reimagines the Chinese tradition of penjing through contemporary spatial media. Penjing compresses landscape and time into a living miniature—a microcosm held in a tray. Penjing World reverses that gesture: the miniature becomes monumental, and the viewer enters the landscape rather than observing it from outside.
The work transplants digitally captured penjing into the architectural voids of the Los Angeles Metro, transforming botanical forms into immersive urban landscapes. Within a continuous multilevel game environment, 3D Gaussian Splatting renders these landscapes as unstable volumetric fields, while an OSC-based audio-reactive system translates a custom soundtrack into spatial distortions and tremors across the splat fields. Together, these processes shift the environment between captured reality and abstraction. What begins as a small object of contemplation becomes an expansive spatial world where digital landscape emerges as an active presence.
