„spill” is a three-channel installation oscillating between photography and focusing on the split-second inertia experienced by masculine bodies in the act of falling. Western culture generally resists falling because of the aversion to shame and failure associated with it. It also represents the actual physical direction of dying, tapping into one of our most primal fears. Advocating for a fall seems to provoke danger or pain. But falling - or failing - can be an agent of change. In this work, the vulnerability of falling is a vital and emancipatory force in redefining contemporary masculinity. // In choke (2017) two intertwined bodies demonstrate their own form of choreography. For this work, Stefański filmed two Jiu-Jitsu fighters performing a routine and subsequently manipulated the footage through a slow-motion playback. The result is as much of an intimate analysis of these entangled bodies as it is a documentation of their choreographed performance. The human body is pictured as an undiscovered, mysterious continent, a series of terrains and textures that are coursed over by the camera lens. // Series of infrared films and photographs featuring subjects identifying as men. They are filmed in their bedrooms throughout the night, in single long takes, while asleep. Portrait photographs are taken the following morning and accompany the videos. The series focuses on sleep as one of the most vulnerable states of our existence and vulnerability itself as a way to emancipate masculinity from the roles and ideas that patriarchy have been imposing on it for centuries.
